Semana de la Fotonovela Negra dia 5: INTERWIEW WITH Mort Todd & BIG NEWS
Bueno terminamos la semana con una entrevista hace mucho tiempo prometida y un anuncio que creo le va a encantar a todos los fans de la fotonovela.
Una de las primeras cosas que hice cuando me contacté con Mort todd, el editor norteamericano que comenzó a editar en ese país las fotonovelas de Killing (allá llamado Sadistik), fue pedirle una entrevista por e-mail. Costó su tiempo para que Mort respondiera pero al fin conseguí que respondiera este cuestionario. Así que empecemos con la entrevista a Mort Todd, el tipo que ha vuelto a poner en papel a Killing. Ah, por cierto, las imágenes que ilustran la entrevista son páginas del comic book de Sadistik, que en pocos días más sale a la venta.
We finish the week with an interview a long time ago promised and an announcement that I believe is going to charm to all the fans of the photonovel.
One of the first things that I did when I contacted Mort Todd, the American publisher that began to publish in that country the fotonovelas of Killing (there called Sadistik), was to ask him for an interview by e-mail. Mort took his time to answer but at last I got it.
So, we can at last read the interview with Mort Todd, the guy that has publish Kiling again.

Primero que nada, cuéntame un poco sobre ti y tu curriculum, para saber de donde vienes...

MORT TODD vendió su primer guión para un piloto de la televisión llamado The Ultimates mientras todavía un adolescente, pero ha pasado la mayoría de su carrera en los comics. Fue jefe de redacción de revista Cracked a los 23 y consiguió notoriedad atrayendo a Don Martin "el Artista Mas Loco de la revista Mad" a su revista. Mientras siguió allí, creó también Monsters Attack!, una revista en la que participaron historietistas de la EC y Warren Comics como John Severin, Alex Toth, Steve Ditko y Gene Colan. Tiempo después empezó una línea de la comics sobre música en Marvel, trabajando con músicos como KISS, Rob Zombie, los Rolling Stones y los herederos de Elvis Presley y Bob Marley.
Como escritor, dibujante o editor, él ha trabajado como freelance en casi todas las compañía de cómic books, trabajando desde Superman a Spiderman, desde Barbie hasta Looney Toons. En los diarios, Mort ha escrito y/o dibujado Speed Racer, Rat Fink y Molly the Model, entre otras. Sus ilustraciones han agraciado muchas tapas de CD (inclusive la popular antología de garaje punk de los años 60 Back From the Grave), revistas, periódicos y anuncios.
Mort ha tenido también una carrera larga en películas, video y animación. Muchas comerciales premiados tuvieron su storyboard hecho por Mort y ha producido animación para Disney, CBS y MTV así como un piloto animado de la televisión que presenta a Cristpher Walken. Recientemente, Mort fue Asistente de dirección en corto con actores Distraction y dirigió su primer corto, una comedia de gángsters llamada A Change of Heart.
Desde el 2001, Mort ha trabajado con la compañía Comicfix para desarrollar licencias de series en medios gráficos, cine, tv y animación. Además de traducir y adaptar Killing / SADISTIK y desarrollar el piloto para televisión Beware: Sadistik, Mort está tambien adaptando la novela negra The Screaming Mimi de Fredric Brown como una novela gráfica y guión para película. Otras series incluyen Bat Lady, Molly the Model y The Uggly Family (co-creada con el dibujante Daniel Clowes). -¿Cómo supiste sobre Kiling? ¿Cómo descubriste al personaje?
He sido implicado personalmente conseguir licencias por años y nuestra compañía ha licenciado propiedades como The Screaming Mimi de Fredric Brown y Speed Racer (Meteoro para los televidentes latinoamericanos). Buscábamos conseguir la licencia de algún carácter italiano para la publicar en USA y un amigo de un amigo nos contó acerca de un abogado con contactos italianos que quería vender los derechos de un carácter poco conocido llamado Killing. ¡Hice alguna investigación y me gustó lo que vi! ¿A quién no le gustaría?
-¿Por qué el carácter te atrajo tanto para tratar de obtener los derechos y publicarlo en EEUU?
¡Es un tipo en un traje de esqueleto que se junta con mujeres semi desnudas en los años sesenta! ¡La clase de cosas que le gustan a los hombres! =)
-¿Qué sabes acerca de las fotonovelas? Este no fue un género popular en EEUU (a diferencia de America Latina o Europa, donde el género fue GRANDE)...
Soy un fan antiguo de TODO el comic mundial y he recogido con el paso de los años fotonovelas de Inglaterra, Francia y Japón. Las tentativas para hacer fotonovelas en EEUU han tneido poco éxito (adaptando en su mayor parte películas y series de televisión). Produje mi primer fotonovela hace casi 20 años para la revista Cracked (específicamente para la Cracked Collectors Edition nº #69). La fotonovela se basó en una historia dibujada el Rey de las Pin Ups, Hill Ward (cuyo trabajo había sido pirateado en Killing) y la protagonizó una ex - Playmate de Playboy, Bebe Buell. Esta fotonovela también es digna de mención ya que presentó primera aparición profesional en cualquier medio de la futura actriz Liv Tyler (cuando ella tenía unos 8 años).
-¿Por qué publicas Kiling ahora en EEUU? ¿Por qué piensas que el carácter podría funcionarlo suficiente para publicarlo en una Novela Gráfica?
Ahora más que nunca, América está lista. Es un género sin explotar en Norteamérica que ha demostrado ser popular el resto del mundo y los Americanos están ahora más abriertos a la cultura pop extranjera. Basado en la popularidad de culto de los DVD de Danger: Diabolik y Kilink, y la nostalgia por las chicas y los pin ups de los años sesenta, yo siento que hay un mercado, incluso si yo lo tengo que crear
Además, ¿mencioné al tipo en un traje de esqueleto? Los esqueletos venden!
-¿Por qué el cambio de nombre a Sadistik? ¿No es bastante confusa de por si la tradición de cambiarle el nombre del carácter en cada uno del os países que se publica? ¿O estàs tratando de continuar la tradición? =)
Hicimos una búsqueda de copyrights y el nombre Satanik ya estaba registrado en USA. Y yo sentía que Killing era un nombre demasiado raro para un. El personaje a menudo es descrito como sadistic (sádico en inglés), así que figuré que podía agrargarle la letra antiheroica "K" y así obtener un nombre. Y, ya que todos los criminales buenos utilizan muchos alias, y él ya tuvo 5 nombres diferentes, ¿qué es uno más? Desde que el carácter es nuevo para los norteamericanos, ellos no saben de esto. Solo puede resultar confuso a los lectores internacionales, pero pienso que ellos entenderán por qué lo hice.
-¿Qué sabe usted acerca del producción de la fotonovela y sobre las personas que trabajan en ella?
Todo que sé acerca de la producción de las fotonovelas de Killing que lo he puesto en el sitio gosadistik.com. Es realmente divertido averiguar más acerca de los actores y ver películas con ellos. Un corresponsal en Italia está localizando y entrevistando a muchos de ellos o a sus herederos. ¡Con la popularidad de la serie ellos pueden conseguir nuevos fans!
-¿De que manera se consiguieron los derechos de los personajes?
Yo no fui implicado en las negociaciones. Eso fue dejado a abogados bilingües. ¡Aparentemente los herederos del editor estaban vendiendo su catálogo y nosotros lo conseguimos!
-¿A personas personas piensas que la novela gráfica de Sadistik atraerá?
¡A tipos raros como vos y yo! ¡Y hay muchos de nosotros! Pienso que apelará a fans de la lucha libre, de las películas de terror, de películas Euro trash, ventiladores cómicos, de pelis de espías, etc., etc.
-¿Piensas hacer algo más con Kiling después de reimprimir sus historias? ¿Más películas, nuevas fotonovelas?
Bien, por supuesto, está el comic book de Sadistik (por ahora un único número). He escrito un piloto para televisión, ambientado en 1966, que una gran productora en NY está mostrando a las cadenas de televisión. Yo estoy expandiéndolo el guión a 2 horas para que pueda ser un piloto de la TV, dos episodios de una serie o una película. ¡Qué bueno sería si pudiéramos encontrar a un co-productor extranjero en un país donde el carácter tenga todavía fans!. Con una (hasta ahora) frecuencia trimestral de publicación nosotros tenemos quince años para republicar todo el material original y quizá podríamos reimprimir también el material argneitno. ¡Si la serie de la televisión se vende, sería mi sueño producir nuevas fotonovelas de Sadistik en colores con un buen presupuesto y actrices en ascenso!
-¿Si la novela gráfica de Killing vende, están pensando en publicar material semejante? ¿Qué personajes?
No hay planes todavía, pero ¿quién sabe? Pienso que Namur o Yorga serían populares si pudiéramos llegar au n acuerdo con editorial Record.
-¿Qué otro material publica tu editorial?
Comicfix es una pequeña editorial que desarrolla propiedades para la televisión y la película por medio de los comics. Hemos publicado unas pocas colecciones de nuestra historieta interactiva Molly the Model, una parodia política super heroica de la campaña Presidencial del 2004 y tenemos algunos proyectos con otros editores, como Bob Marley y The Uggly Family. Hacemos también storyboards y animación para televisión. Acabamos de terminar un piloto animado para Court TV, y el piloto para televisión de SADISTIK y La película de Screaming Mimi están siendo mostrados en los estudios.
-¿Alguna otra cosa que quieras agregar?
¡Solo que espero colaborar con vos en KILLING TIME! Estoy seguro que despertará un amplio interés en el género!

MORT TODD sold his first screenplay for a TV pilot called The Ultimates while still a teenager, but has spent the majority of his career in comics. He was Editor-in-Chief of Cracked magazine at 23 and gained notoriety by luring Mads Maddest Artist Don Martin to the magazine. While there he also created Monsters Attack!, a magazine featuring cartoonists from the EC and Warren comics like John Severin, Alex Toth, Steve Ditko and Gene Colan. Later he started a line of music comics at Marvel, working with such musical artists as KISS, Rob Zombie, the Rolling Stones and the estates of Elvis Presley and Bob Marley.
As a writer, artist or editor, he has freelanced at just about every comic book company from working on Superman and Spider-Man to Barbie and Looney Tunes. Newspaper comic strips Mort has written and drawn include Speed Racer, Rat Fink and Molly the Model. His illustrations have graced many CD covers (including the popular Back from the Grave series of 1960s garage punk), magazines, newspapers and ads.
Mort has also had a long career in film, video and animation. Many award-winning commercials were storyboarded by Mort and he has produced animation for Disney, CBS and MTV as well as an animated TV pilot featuring Christopher Walken. Recently, Mort was Assistant Director on the live action short Distraction and directed his first live action short, a gangster comedy called A Change of Heart.
Since 2001, Mort has worked with the media company Comicfix in developing licensed properties for publishing, film, TV and animation. Besides translating and adapting SADISTIK and developing the Beware: SADISTIK TV show, Mort is also adapting the noir novel The Screaming Mimi as a graphic novel and screenplay. Other properties include Bat Lady, Molly the Model and The Uggly Family (co-created with Oscar nominated writer Daniel Clowes). Morts Protoplasman comic will be released in Summer 2006 by Big Bang Comics and Comicfix will be releasing more SADISTIK photo novels and a new comic book.
-How did you know about Killing? How did you discover the character?
Ive been personally involved in licensing for years and our company has licensed such properties as Fredric Browns The Screaming Mimi and Speed Racer. We were looking into licensing some Italian character for American publication and a friend of a friend told us about a lawyer with Italian contacts that wanted to sell the rights to an obscure character named Killing. I did some research and liked what I saw! Who wouldnt?
-Why the character attracts you so much to try to obtain the rights and try to publish in USA?
Its a dude in a skeleton suit partying with semi-unclad babes from the 60s! The kind men like!
-What do you know about Photo Novels? This wasn`t a genre with popularity in USA (a difference with Latin Amnerica or Europa , when the genre was BIG)...
Im a long-time fan of ALL comics worldwide and over the years have picked up photo comics from England, France and Japan. Attempts at photo novels have been tried in America to little success (mostly adapting movies and TV shows). I produced my first photo comic almost 20 years ago (!) for Cracked magazine (actually Cracked Collectors Edition #69). It was based on a feature drawn by the King of Pin Ups, Bill Ward (whose work had been bootlegged in Killing) and starred a former Playboy Playmate, Bebe Buell. The photo story is also noteworthy in that it featured the first appearance anywhere of future starlet Liv Tyler (when she was about 8 years old)!
-Why publish KILING NOW IN usa? Why do you think that the character could work enough to publish in a Graphic Novel?
Now more than ever, America is ready. Its an untapped genre in the States that has proved popular everywhere else and Americans are now more open to foreign pop culture. Based on the cult popularity of the Danger: Diabolik and Kilink DVD releases, and the nostalgia of 60s babes and pin ups, I feel theres a market, even if I have to create it
plus, did I mention, the guys in a skeleton suit (skulls sell!)?
-Why the name change of Sadistik? Is it not enough the really difficult tradition of name change of the character? Or are you triying to continue the confusing name Tradition? =)
We did a copyright search and Satanik was already registered in America and I felt Killing was just too weird for a name. He is often described as sadistic, so I figured add the anti-hero K to it and weve got a name. And, since all good criminals use many aliases, and he already had 5 different names, whats one more? Since the character is new to Americans, theyre oblivious. It could only be potentially confusing to international readers but I think theyll get over it!
-What do you know about the producton of the photnovel? Aobut the people who work on it?
Everything I know about the production of the Killing photo stories Ive posted on the goSADISTIK.com site. Its really fun to find out more about the actors and see movies with them. A correspondent in Italy is tracking down and interviewing many of them or their survivors. With the popularity of the series they may all get some newfound fans.
-How was the way to obtein the rights of the characters?
I wasnt involved in the negotiations. That was left to bi-lingual lawyers. Apparently the estate of the publisher was unloading their catalog and we snatched it up!
-Which people do you think that the Sadistik GN will attract?
Weirdos like you and me! And theres lots of us! I think it will appeal to fans of lucha libre, horror films, Euro Trash cult movies, comic fans, spy fans, etc., etc.
-Are you planing to do something more aobut Kiling after reprinting his stories? Movies, more photo novels?
Well, of course, theres the Sadistik comic book (an only issue till now). I have written a TV pilot, set in 1966, which a major production house in NY is shopping to cable networks. Im also expanding it into a 2-hour script that can be a TV pilot, two TV episodes or a movie. What would be great is if we could find a foreign co-producer in a country where the character still has fans. With a (so-far) quarterly schedule we have 15 years worth of books and maybe could reprint the Argie stuff, too. If the TV series sells, it would be my dream to produce new Sadistik photo novels in color with a good budget and rising starlets!
-If the Killing GN sells, are you thiniking in to publish similar stuff? Which characters?
There are no plans yet, but who knows? I think Namur or Yorga would be popular if we could come to an agreement with Record.
-What other stuff publishes your eidotrial?
Comicfix is a small publisher that develops properties for TV and film through comics. Weve published a few collections from our interactive comic strip Molly the Model, a political superhero parody of the Presidential campaign in 2004 and have some projects with other publishers, like Bob Marley and the Uggly Family. We also do storyboards and animation for TV. We just finished an animated pilot for Court TV, the SADISTIK TV show and The Screaming Mimi film are being shopped around.
-Any other thing that you wanna add?
Just that I look forward to collaborating with you on KILLING TIME and am sure it will awaken a wide interest in the genre!
Bueno, ahora ustedes se preguntarán que es ese Killing Time que nombra Mort al final de la entrevista. Es que en todos estos meses, Mort y quien esto escribe han entablado una relación cordial via mail, descubriendo, entre otras cosas, que Mr. Todd veía a Jorge Porcel cuando trabajaba en la tele latina de USA (lo que demuestra un serio nivel de daño cerebral que nos hermana aún mas =).
En esas idas y venidas se nos ocurrió que estaría bien sistematizar un poco más lo que íbamos descubriendo sobre killing y demas personajes de fotonovelas. Y así nació la idea de hacer un e-zine dedicado a ellos, escrito en español e inglés y cubriendo lo mejor posible a este género tan poco conocido.
Now you could be asking what is that Killing Time stuff that Mort names at the end of the interview. Let ME explain it.
In all these months, Mort and which this write have begun a cordial relation via mail, discovering, among others things, that Mr. Todd saw on TV the show of Argentine comedian Jorge Porcel when Porcel worked in the Latin American network TV of USA (which shows that the guy has a serious level of cerebral damage that put us in the same league =).
In those mail exchanges it occurred to both of us that it could be good to order a little more what we went discovering about Killing/Sadistik and other photo novel characters. And thus it was born the idea to do an e-zine dedicated to this genre, written in Spanish and English and covering the best way possible this forgotten subgenre.
Así que hoy hacemos la primicia mundial: ¡pronto vamos a poner online el primer número de KILLING TIME, La Revista Bilingüe de Maníacos, Monstruos y Malhechores! El primer número tiene como plato principal una larga nota sobre Namur y otra sobre Killing en Argneitna, entre otras cosas. Esténse atentos que mas pronto del o que se creen van a poder leer esta nueva revista. Minetras tanto, deléitense con un boceto (no definitivo) de la tapa y una imagen promocional hecha por Mort.

y no killing no se publico en chile. Lo que pasa es que yo soy argneitno y solo hace poco mas de tres ñaos que resido en Chile. Conb lo cual killing si esi mprotante para mi aqunque acan o lo conocieron ni por casualidad.
Peor ubeno, tenian para ocmpensar al doctor Mortis que era una historieta de terror increible...

Coincido con Ud. que bueno seria que el sr. baccino editara la seccion fotonovelas, sabe un monton del tema.

Era un vigilante que luchaba contra el mal, pero lo que fallaba mucho eran los argumentos, muy delirantes y sin sentido.
En el primer numero matan la novia de Crisex y se lía con la hermana gemela, que es asesinada en el número 2, es que el chico no tenía suerte en el amor...
Las chicas eran bastante bonitas, de la única que me acuerdo el nombre es de Cristina Vásquez (que tambien salió en Yorga y Namur).
Y mención especial para el que hacía de inspector el señor Protasio Lozano, antiguo conocido de mi madre.

A Ud. sr. barreiro le tiro tres nombres de fotonovelas contemporaneas a Killing, las tres argentinas pero que duraron muy poco, Bonda, una rubia con traje parecido a Namur, Crisex, una especie de Santo , el enmascarado de plata, y Zetequis, una morocha bien dotada que andaba en un buggy.
Espero con ansiedad material de "Araña Negra": Linda Peretz.
Lamento no tener en mi caso material alguno, no se si el señor >Baccino los ompra en Ebay.it, en mi caso cuando contacte a un vendedor el tipo se excuso de vender por razones de distancia.
